THE STRONGEST JOINT SYSTEM
Best:
Known as a DOVETAILED HOUSING JOINT, the advantages of this method are maximum strength, with support throughout the entire length of the cabinet frame. Also the dovetail cut resists separation from the framework. A more time consuming manufacturing process than other methods, this is the joint used in all GSC brand garage cabinet models.
Better:
This joint is a DADO or HOUSING JOINT. It is similar in nature to the joint pictured above. This is a very strong frame joint that lacks the side loading stress resistance of the dovetailed housing joint. This joint supports the entire length of the cabinet frame as well.
Good:
This joint is a REBATED LAP JOINT. It has average strength qualities and is primarily used in conjunction with glue and screws / staples in manufacturing of drawers and light duty cabinetry applications.
Weakest:
This is known as a BUTT JOINT. This joint has two flat surfaces that are mated together then fastened with any or some of the following methods: Glue, screws or staples. If screwed or stapled, the cabinet is relying on the small amount of wood over the screws or staples to support the weight. This is the easiest and most inexpensive way to manufacture of all methods. Butt joints do not enjoy the strength characteristics of the joints shown above. Cost factors in cabinetry always are reflective of the manufacturing process and materials used.
